Satyanarayan Puja is performed to appease Lord Satyanarayan, the most compassionate form of Lord Vishnu. Satya means ‘Truth’ and Narayana means ‘The highest being’ and hence Lord Satyanarayan is considered the epitome of Truth and Justice. The puja is performed to offer our gratitude to the Almighty on the start or successful completion of auspicious events in one’s life. The puja is also performed to fulfill one’s wishes and desires. The purpose of Satynarayan Puja is also to bring friends and family together and encourage unity and harmony and performed to make sure that abundance, prosperity, general happiness as well as well being prevails in the family. The puja is said to be performed from ancient times and dates to the Skanda Purana. It is written that Narada asked Lord Vishnu the mantra or the way to end the miseries of the people on Earth. In response, Lord himself told, that worshipping Lord Satyanarayan will be the ultimate way of happiness and Moksha in the Kaliyuga.


Satyanarayan Puja is performed by Pandit Ji by doing Gowri Ganesh Puja and reading of Lord Satyanarayan Kathas which contains 5 chapters and havan is performed in the praise of Lord Satyanarayan to receive his blessings after which distribution of Satynarayan Puja Prasad is done.


When to Perform Satyanarayan Puja?

Saturdays, Ekadashi, and Poornima(full moon day) along with the months of Kartik and Baishakh are considered auspicious times to perform Satyanarayan puja and this puja is usually performed during the evening time. However, there’s no problem in doing this puja in the morning. On the puja day, devotees have to fast until the puja is over. The purpose of fasting is to ensure that no negative thoughts or desires come to mind before, during or after the puja. Once the puja is completed, devotees can seek blessings of Lord Satyanarayan and break their fast by taking prasad.


Which prasad is offered for Satyanarayan Puja?

Sheera or Halwa is usually made with Rava , sugar, ghee, milk and dry fruits.
